A missed deadline can turn a simple benefits request into a stressful situation.
Councils may send letters asking you to provide information, complete a review or supply supporting evidence. Knowing what to do and doing it on time is an important part of managing your claim.
1. Read Every Letter
Don’t assume a council letter is simply an update. Read through it carefully and check whether you are being asked to take action.
2. Highlight Important Dates
If a letter gives you a deadline, write it somewhere you will remember.
You can also set a reminder on your phone or calendar.
3. Keep Your Documents Together
Having your important benefit documents in one place makes it easier to respond when information is requested.
4. Ask for Help When You Need It
If you have difficulty reading letters, completing online forms or communicating with your council, getting support early can make the process easier.
5. Keep Track of Your Claim
Don’t wait until there is a problem before checking what is happening with your benefit claim. Regularly monitoring your correspondence and outstanding requests can help you stay informed.
